The late Neoclassical facade overlooks Piazza Garibaldi with its porticoes. The church was designed by the engineer Antonio Arrivabene from Mantua and was completed in 1854, following the demolition of the 15C church of San Biagio, the first parish church outside the castle.

In 1956, an extension was added to the presbytery. Between 1953 and 1955, the painter Alessandro Dal Prato from Mantua decorated the vault of the apse with scenes centred on the sacrifice of Jesus and on the church militant and at prayer.
