The church, designed by Filippo Juvara, is in baroque style with classical influences. It was built in different periods because of frequent flooding of the River Po. Its slender, taut lines make it a gem of 17C architecture.
Notable features in the interior include an altarpiece of the Annunciation by Scarsellino, and four pictures of St Carlo Borromeo, St Francis de Sales, St John the Good and St Catherine of Siena by Bazzani and his school.
