Church of St Pietro Apostolo

Church of St Pietro Apostolo

The present parish church was commenced in 1750 and completed in 1830. It boasts one of the finest organs in the diocese. St Peter the Apostle is the patron saint of the parish.

In the Middle Ages, the Barbasso area along with Carzedole, now Villa Garibaldi, Governolo, Casale and Roncoferraro formed part of a feud controlled by the Canossa family. This area, recorded in 11C documents, was passed from Tedaldo to Bonifacio and from him to Countess Matilda of Tuscany.

In 1088, the Countess passed the corte of Barbasso to the bishop of Mantua and, in 1105, the remaining possessions went to the Benedictine monastery of Polirone.
