This church has extremely old roots although the present construction can be dated to between 1730 and 1741, the time of its radical refurbishment by Paolo Soratini from Camoldoli in the province of Brescia.

The facade is majestic, with sturdy side buttresses and a bell-tower that rises to 64 m (365 steps to the belfry). The nave, dominated by an Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a fresco by B. Dall’Acqua from Vicenza, welcomes visitors into an interior resplendent with magnificent late-Baroque decoration and stuccowork.

The church is also a sanctuary and the 15C Our Lady of Graces fresco brought from San Sebastiano, an adjacent oratory demolished in 1785, is its oldest and most venerated work. The building excels for the inventive of the painters who enlightened the art of Mantua in the 18C: Giuseppe Bazzani, Francesco Maria Raineri, also known as Schivenoglia, and Marcantonio Ghislina.
