Golena di Sant`Alberto

Golena di Sant`Alberto

A vast flood-bed area where poplars are grown, located on the left bank of the river Oglio, in the Municipality of Marcaria, forms the visible track of an ancient meander near the river bank. It exists as a vast and diversified wetland used inthe past for breeding fish. A very interesting system was used to reclaim this oxbow-lake, called the  “mallet” system. Large ditches were excavated to recover strips of earth parallel to each other and on both sides of the oxbow-lake, forming a pattern similar to “herring bow”. Currently there is rich aquatic and river vegetation alongside the poplar woods.  There are various small lakes in the area called “skeps”, one of which is surrounded by a wild wood with ancient ash trees  (Fraxinusoxyphilla), oak trees (Quercusrobur), and white poplar trees (Populus alba), typical of the ancient wet forests of the Lombardy Plain. The whole area can be visited along a circular path.(Oglio South park text)
