HISTORY
Corte Castiglioni, a XV century country house, historically bound to the agricultural function, is placed into the green country of Lombardy, at a few kilometres from Mantua. The house belongs to the same family that has lived here during holidays throughout the centuries since 1415, when the Gonzagas granted the lands of Casatico to the Castiglionis. Baldassarre Castiglione (1478 – 1529) was the most illustrious inhabitant in the house and the most famous representative in his family.
Baldassarre, one of the finest and most cultured people in the Renaissance Italy, gave a significant contribution to the architectural structure of the house thanks also to the relationships with the great protagonists of the art of his time. He was deeply fond of Raffaello, who portrayed him in a painting now exhibited into the Louvre museum. Another important friendship was the one with Giulio Romano, Raffaello’s favourite pupil, who realized the funeral chapel into the Sanctuary in Grazie, a tiny village at seven kilometres from Mantua. Camillo, Baldassarre’s eldest son, was the author of the radical significant transformation of the house, the manor part of the house in particular; this transformation was based on an idea of Giulio Romano, Baldassarre’s friend and personal architect of the Gonzaga family. At the time, the fortified tower was built at the end of the manor house. After these architectural changes, other interventions on frescos and inner decorations were made; for this reason, some of the most famous Mantuan artists of the second half of the XVI century went and worked in this house.
The last interventions are dated back to the XVIII century and from then on the look of the manor house and the country house remained the same. The house is still property of the Castiglioni family.
